Parent-Child Bonding through Touch
by Amelia Auckett
(Hill of Content Publishing, Melbourne, 1981)
This book is a great introduction to massage, at an age when it's the best time to begin. Other books like Swedish Child Massage continue with techniques for older children (e.g. Buddy Massage), but getting used to physical contact is best in infancy. Many photographs are included, and there are also a few videos on baby massage available on the web. This is a subject worth studying in-depth. If you're pregnant and still have a lot of free time, then read Ashley Montague's (rather long) classic Touching: the Human Significance of the Skin about the importance of physical contact in general. But Amelia Auckett's book is the perfect introduction to getting close to your baby.
